Home Theater Interconnects Between __________ and __________

Don't make any of these connections while components are plugged in or powered on. More advanced home theater systems may require connections beyond the basics discussed below, especially those that include a video projector and motorized projection screen, and/or are tied into a whole house audio system. Also, no two A/V systems are alike, so not all of the types of cables and information below will apply to your specific situation, and/or there may be other types of cable connections that need to be made in addition to these. Get a professional technician involved if you are unsure of what exactly needs to be done to complete your home theater installation properly. Click on any photo below for more info on how to purchase.

.... Electrical Home Theater Components and AC Power Outlet(s)

You definitely don't want to plug your A/V components directly into an AC outlet for power. You need a home theater grade power strip/bar surge protector or component-type power conditioner with (more than) enough AC outlets to plug in all of the main front-of-the-room system components [television, home theater receiver or soundbar, speakers with integrated powered subwoofers, Blu-ray Disc player, cable/sat TV tuner, gaming console(s), powered subwoofer(s) if nearby, network router if nearby]. Depending on where you locate your powered sub, you might want a separate mini surge protector for it, too.

.... Home Network Router and Network-Ready Components

Run an Ethernet cable from your network router to each component that you wish to be hard-wired directly to your network, such as a network-ready home theater receiver, Blu-ray Disc player, game console, and/or Smart TV.

.... Towers and Speakers On Stands, Shelves, or Tables and Home Theater Receiver

If you are not running any wiring through or inside walls, ceiling, or floor, use any type of speaker wire of appropriate gauge that you prefer, and banana plugs if you wish to terminate the ends. Be sure to observe polarity (+ and -) on speaker cables.

.... Wall/Ceiling-Mounted Bookshelf/Satellite Speakers and Home Theater Receiver

If you are running any speaker wires from wall/ceiling speaker mount locations through the walls/ceiling, use in-wall rated speaker wire, and a speaker wire wall plate and banana plugs if needed. If you will be running speaker wires along the walls, you may want to use flat adhesive speaker wire like Sewell Ghost Wire (no affiliation) that can be run inconspicuously along the walls, baseboards, etc. Be sure to observe polarity (+ and -) on speaker cables.

.... Flush Mounted In-Wall and/or In-Ceiling Speakers and Home Theater Receiver

Use in-wall rated speaker wire to be sure that any wiring that runs inside of walls, ceiling, and/or floor meets electrical code requirements. On the receiver end, you may want a speaker wire wall plate and banana plugs for a clean look running from the wall to your home theater receiver. Be sure to observe polarity (+ and -) on speaker cables.

.... Powered Subwoofer(s) and Home Theater Receiver

Assuming your sub(s) is/are not "wireless", run subwoofer cable(s) from the LFE subwoofer output(s) on back of the home theater receiver to the LFE input(s) on back of your subwoofer(s).

.... HD/4K Source Components and Home Theater Receiver (or Soundbar w/ HDMI)

.... Non-HD and Analog A/V Source Components and Home Theater Receiver

DVD player, LaserDisc player, VCR, and old gaming consoles will need to be connected with component (RGB) with optical digital audio cable OR with stereo RCA cables or composite (yellow) video cable with analog stereo L+R (white and red) audio cables running out of each component to one of the A/V inputs on back of your home theater receiver. If you wish to be able to record onto blank VHS tapes, you will also need to run A/V cables back out of the receiver to the A/V input on the VCR.

.... Analog Audio-Only Source Components and Home Theater Receiver

CD player, audio cassette deck, turntable should be connected with decent quality stereo L+R audio cables from the outputs on back of the source components to an analog audio only input on back of the home theater receiver. If the turntable does not have a built-in phono pre-amp, be sure to plug it into the receiver's dedicated phono input. If you wish to be able to record onto blank audio cassette tapes, you will also need to run stereo audio cables back out of the receiver to the L+R audio input on the cassette deck.

.... (Smart) TV (or Projector) and Home Theater Receiver (or Soundbar w/ HDMI)

If you plan on using any of the streaming media apps included with your Smart TV and/or you will be connecting a DTV antenna to the television to receive free over-the-airwaves broadcast TV programming, you will need to run a high-speed HDMI cable out from the HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) input/output on back of your television to the ARC-ready HDMI input on your home theater receiver (or HDMI soundbar) to enable two-way signal transmission between them. You will also probably have to change some settings in your menus. If you won't be using any streaming media apps from your television, you can simply run an HDMI cable from the HDMI output on your home theater receiver (or HDMI soundbar) to the primary (highest bandwidth 4K @ 60Hz) HDMI input on back of your television and do all of your system control through your receiver and it's remote. Regarding a wall-mounted television or ceiling-mounted video projector, use in-wall CL2 rated HDMI cable if it will be run through/inside walls, ceiling, or floor.
